Step aside After Eights, there are some new chocolates in town.
These chocolate truffles came about as part of an event I was running for a university Christian events week. I was organising a canapé evening and, having a sweet tooth myself, wanted to go beyond the savoury canapés and provide a sweet option.
I made gallons of this chocolate mixture in two big buckets and then had volunteers rolling endless balls of chocolate in the afternoon before the event. They went down an absolute treat, people absolutely loved them and I’m sure you will.
They are delightfully smooth (the use of butter in addition to cream brings this) and they taste like a slightly more sophisticated version of a Terry’s chocolate orange. The orange extract brings this quite unique flavour, which I think is delicious.
These make excellent gifts for friends, wrapped up in a pretty little box. They are the perfect end to a meal. And they are a delightful late night indulgence. I promise you will fall in love with them.
Orange Chocolate Truffles
Makes 15 truffles (depending on size)
Ingredients
150 dark chocolate
15g butter
125 ml double cream
¾ tsp orange extract
Cocoa powder (for dusting)
(see notes for ingredient replacement and store cupboard substitutions below the method)
Method
Break up the chocolate and place in a bowl with the butter and orange extract
In a saucepan heat the cream until it just comes to a boil (don’t let it boil over!). Take it off the heat and pour immediately on the chocolate mixture. Leave to stand for a minute, then stir until all the chocolate and butter is melted and you have a gorgeously shiny ganache. Place in the fridge for 2 hours until firm.
Remove from the fridge, then roll into balls (size of your choice) and roll them in cocoa powder to coat them.
Give them as gifts, eat them yourself or serve them to your friends.
Notes, substitutions and variations
Chocolate: Use milk or dark chocolate (I use dark). Quality of the chocolate is very much up to you, I’m stingy so my go-to is Tesco value obviously.
Butter: make this vegan by using a vegan spread – works just as well.
Cream: again you can use a vegan cream alternative – I’ve used oat cream which produces a different texture of truffle, but still delicious.
Orange extract: this can be found in any supermarket now and it brings an excellent flavour. Alternatively, you can use the zest of ½ an orange. But if you can get your hand on orange extract its really worth it. And it lasts for ages!
Salt: a pinch of salt brings out
Variations
Vanilla: replace orange extract with vanilla
Nuts: stir through crushed hazelnuts for a Ferrero Roche vibe. Or roll in crushed pistachios for an air of sophistication.

Delightfully smooth, with a citrus tang. These taste like a slightly more sophisticated version of a Terry’s chocolate orange.
